Dynamic Agroforestry Shows a Variety of Positives to Yields, Pest Control, Soil Fertility, Biodiversity, and Return on Labour

Researchers describe Dynamic Agroforestry (DAF) systems in Bolivia. These systems group crops and trees by lifespan. Pioneer species live under 8 months. Secondary species live up to 80 years. Primary species live beyond 80 years. This structure fills every spatial layer and time phase in the system.

In orange plantations, farmers converted monoculture to DAF in Alto Beni. The converted system showed less fruit fly damage than monoculture. It also produced significantly higher yields. Sugar content stayed the same between systems. Soil fertility improved too. DAF plots developed significantly more humus and a deeper Ah-horizon than monoculture plots.

The mature orange DAF plantation now holds over 60 tree species. It contains more than 1,000 trees and palms per hectare. Soil fertility rose as supporting plant diversity increased.

Researchers also studied birds across five cacao systems and a natural fallow. They recorded 239 bird visits spanning 43 species and 18 families. Bird visits tracked vegetation complexity closely. Visits declined from fallow to DAF to simple agroforestry to monoculture. Monocultures held only half the species richness found in fallow plots. DAF bird composition closely resembled the natural fallow, pointing to DAF’s habitat value for conservation.

A separate economic study found agroforestry delivers higher return on labor than monoculture.
