Revitalizing Cacao Nacional Arriba: Boosting Yields, Income & Sustainability

A collaborative initiative to enhance Ecuadorean cocoa farming through sustainable agroforestry practices, empowering small producers and preserving the iconic Cacao Nacional variety.

Ecuadorean fine flavor cocoa, especially the “Arriba” variety, is renowned for its unique floral and fruity flavors, offering producers a premium position in global markets. However, the shift toward monoculture CCN51 has diminished the traditional “Cacao Nacional” (CNA) varieties, which suffer from low yields due to poor upkeep and aging trees, making cocoa farming unappealing to younger generations.

Dynamic Agroforestry offers a sustainable solution to boost CNA productivity and profitability. By integrating training and consultancy, producers can achieve better yields and higher income, making CNA varieties more attractive.

Scaling Dynamic Agroforestry for Sustainable Cocoa Farming

The key objectives of the project are the following:

  • Counseling Program: In partnership with Cooperative UNOCACE and ECOTOP, promote “Cacao Nacional Arriba” cultivation using Dynamic Agroforestry systems.
  • Systemic Approach: Focus on sustainability, impact, and economic development by strengthening public-private collaboration within defined regions.
  • Empowerment: Enhance UNOCACE’s governance and capacity, fostering active participation in development processes.
  • Improving Performance: Support small producers with access to financial services, infrastructure, and tools to generate sustainable income and employment.
  • CO2 Sequestration: The FINCA project is Gold Standard certified, with a forecasted CO₂ sequestration of 435,673 tons through DAF.

This initiative aims to improve the quality of life for around 700 cocoa producers by revitalizing CNA production and creating a viable, long-term income source.
