La v\u00e9g\u00e9tation naturelle de la r\u00e9gion est caract\u00e9ris\u00e9e par une for\u00eat tropicale humide. L'activit\u00e9 agricole est l'une des causes de la d\u00e9forestation acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9e dans la r\u00e9gion et de la perte de biodiversit\u00e9. Les relations expos\u00e9es dans ce travail indiquent que la complexit\u00e9 des syst\u00e8mes vivants ne peut \u00eatre r\u00e9duite \u00e0 volont\u00e9 et que les monocultures finiront t\u00f4t ou tard par affecter leur stabilit\u00e9, comme en t\u00e9moignent la baisse des rendements et les probl\u00e8mes li\u00e9s aux maladies et aux ravageurs. Parmi les causes possibles, on peut citer, d\u2019une part, la faible biodiversit\u00e9 dans les syst\u00e8mes de monoculture et, d\u2019autre part, un apport \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique insuffisant, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire en \u00e9nergie sous forme de compos\u00e9s de lignine. Depuis 1996, des syst\u00e8mes agroforestiers successifs (SAFS) associant l\u2019oranger et d\u2019autres cultures sont d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s dans la r\u00e9gion ; leurs principes de fonctionnement reposent sur la succession naturelle des esp\u00e8ces, en combinant des esp\u00e8ces aux cycles de vie diff\u00e9rents, plant\u00e9es \u00e0 haute densit\u00e9, avec les cultures d\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat \u00e9conomique. La taille permet de maintenir un flux \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique \u00e9lev\u00e9 au sein du syst\u00e8me. Cet article pr\u00e9sente les r\u00e9sultats de recherches sur la fertilit\u00e9 des sols et les attaques de la mouche des fruits dans les plantations d\u2019orangers, tant dans les syst\u00e8mes agroforestiers que dans les monocultures ; il appara\u00eet que les premiers permettent de maintenir des niveaux de fertilit\u00e9 sup\u00e9rieurs et plus \u00e9lev\u00e9s, avec une incidence moindre des ravageurs et des maladies, tout en pr\u00e9servant une biodiversit\u00e9 consid\u00e9rable, avec plus de 60 esp\u00e8ces foresti\u00e8res et fruiti\u00e8res diff\u00e9rentes par hectare.
