Forest or fallow is cleared and burned, cropped for a year or two and then left. Yields fall after the first harvest, and in dry years the fires get out of control.

In Dynamic Agroforestry the vegetation is cut and laid on the ground instead of burned. Maize, rice, beans and cassava come up through the mulch in the first months, while bananas, fruit and timber trees take over in the years that follow. Families eat and sell from the plot from the first season.

On fields close to the house, where a family wants to keep growing food every year, rows of trees are pruned hard before each sowing. Their branches cover the soil, maize, beans or cassava grow in the light between the rows, and the trees resprout to grow the mulch for the next cycle. In Ghana’s Sankofa project, farmers began planting cocoa into these food plots in 2023, so the project decided to merge the two designs.

1,560 kg/ha

average rice yield without burning or fertiliser in Alto Beni, Bolivia (2014–2018)

123 ha

of agroforestry plots set up without burning by 184 farmers in Alto Beni, 2017–2024

3 months

to the first bean harvest, with maize at four

No fire

cut vegetation stays on the field as mulch

Notre approche

Notre façon de travailler avec vous

A programme built with you, from the first field visit to whole communities farming without fire, with local people trained to run it.

1

Évaluer

Mission d'évaluation

We look at the land, the fallow and how families grow food crops today, and run an introductory Dynamic Agroforestry workshop.

2

Conception

Programme sur mesure

Together we plan the planting: annual crops across the plot in the first season, with banana, cassava and pigeon pea, and the trees that will follow.

3

Autonomiser

Renforcement des capacités locales

We train technicians and lead farmers to cut and mulch instead of burning, to sow into the mulch and to prune the companion plants.

4

Échelle

Transformation du paysage

Exchanges between farmers and learning plots carry the method from family to family and village to village.

5

Moniteur

Suivi et rapports

En option, nous surveillons les parcelles à l'aide du DAF Tracker (développé avec FarmTree) afin d'obtenir des données transparentes et comparables.

Rice without burning in Alto Beni

Fundación ECOTOP has grown rice and maize without burning in Alto Beni, Bolivia, for more than a decade.
