SUMMARY:Farmers Network Exchange and Congress in Singapore
DESCRIPTION:This year\, ECOTOP was invited to Singapore to join the Farmers Network Exchange and Congress\, where insights from ECOTOP’s 30-year-old Dynamic Agroforestry training center and the long term Farming System Comparison (SysCom) in Alto Beni\, Bolivia were presented. The Farmers Network Exchange was part of the Cocoa Association of Asia (CAA) International Cocoa Conference 2024\, held in Singapore from September 12-13\, 2024. This exchange aimed to bring together cocoa farmers from various regions for a pre-conference workshop\, focusing on knowledge sharing and sustainable farming practices. \nDuring the workshop\, participants discussed key topics such as climate change adaptation and market access. Farmers from all over the world contributed to this initiative\, offering diverse perspectives and experiences. Insights from these discussions were later shared during the main conference sessions\, providing a platform for farmers’ voices within the broader industry dialogue. \nConversations with farmers revealed that\, regardless of continent\, they face similar challenges\, including low cocoa yields\, pest and disease infestations in young cocoa trees\, and an aging farming population. It became evident that a paradigm shift in farming systems is necessary. History has shown that relying on high chemical fertilizer use\, pesticides\, and herbicides may lead to short-term productivity gains. However\, these practices often result in increased pest and disease pressure\, eventually making farming economically unviable. A more holistic approach is needed\, and one potential solution is Dynamic Agroforestry.

SUMMARY:20th International Course on Dynamic Agroforestry Systems
DESCRIPTION:International course in dynamic agroforestry (syntropic agroforestry)\nUnder the advice of Ernst Götsch\, the first practices of successional agroforestry were introduced in the Alto Beni region of Bolivia in 1995. ECOTOP took up these impulses and made this approach a focus of its agroforestry work\, both at regional and international level. Today\, producers in the Alto Beni region have diverse experience with this approach and there are many plantations of different ages and complexity. \nECOTOP develops methods and strategies to facilitate the understanding of the principles of life for agroforestry production and the appropriate application at the smallholder level and advises producers in different continents. \nThe team of facilitators has extensive practical experience in facilitating processes and in implementing and managing dynamic agroforestry systems based on the principles of syntropic agroforestry in different ecoregions of the world. Strong demand for these techniques from West Africa has led to successful cooperation with various partners in this region. \nDate 25 June\, 2023 – 7 July\, 2023  \nArrival in La Paz Sunday\, June 25\, 2023  \nTrip to Alto Beni Monday\, June 26\, 2023 \nReturn to La Paz Friday\, July 7\, 2023 \nPlace: Sapecho and Sara Ana in Alto Beni-Bolivia \nLanguage: Spanish and English \nCost: 2.400.- USD \nIncludes: accommodation in hotel\, La Paz (June\, 25 until 26\, and July 7 to 8\, 2023)\, travel to Alto Beni\, accommodation\, food\, local transportation\, work materials\, return to La Paz. (Additional cost hotel per person/night in case of spending more days in La Paz\, approx. USD 60). \nApproximately 10 hours a day of work  \nInstructors: \nDr. Joachim Milz  \nIng. Bastian Pellhammer \nTec. Walter Yana \nIng. Fortunato Velasquez \nConcept and content\nOrganic and syntropic farming is based on understanding and insight into the interrelationships of a particular ecosystem. Each ecosystem has its own dynamics\, which are different in each region\, but share the principles of the dynamics of the natural succession of species in time and space. \nThe starting point for the creation of an agro-ecosystem is therefore the original ecosystem of the place itself\, which should serve as a guide. Often\, we still find niches or remnants of these ecosystems and try to restore them and optimise them according to our main crop. \nTo implement the principles of sustainable production\, it is essential that we base ourselves on the principles of life. There are no universal formulas and even fewer technological packages for this type of agriculture. We need a change of mind\, a paradigm shift\, and we need to develop senses other than our rationality to recover the spirit of an agriculture that is the basis for the well-being of humanity and the planet itself. \nMany years of experience with dynamic agroforestry systems in the Alto Beni region of Bolivia\, in Central America\, in Asia and West Africa set up by farmers\, as well as with experimental plots with economically interesting crops\, show that this approach is feasible. In practice\, the concepts are reconstructed in a participatory manner and then replicated at the individual level in each participant’s plots. Therefore\, the methodological approach is not seen as a linear process\, but as a dynamic and very practical one. One of the fundamental methodological principles of this process is practice\, which develops from an understanding of the processes that govern nature. \nThe course focuses on dynamic agroforestry in a holistic framework with systemic thinking.   Holistic thinking assumes that everything is interconnected and interrelated. The whole is more than the sum of its parts. When we take this approach into account\, we understand phenomena such as diseases and pests in our crops as mechanisms of system regulation. In this way\, we can develop background solutions instead of fighting symptoms. \nMethodology\nConsidering that every change starts from a change within oneself\, experience-based techniques are developed to deal with oneself and one’s environment. The starting point is a diagnosis of the current production situation with a systemic approach. The focus is on food production as well as on the production of “cash crops”\, especially cocoa\, coffee and other perennial crops. An overview of global cocoa production is also given and the production situation of countries such as Côte d’Ivoire\, Ghana\, Sierra Leone\, and Ecuador is analysed. \nBased on this analysis\, the principles of dynamic agroforestry (syntropic agroforestry) will be developed and technically applied in different contexts\, from the establishment of a new plot without burning for annual crops to management practices such as pruning\, stratification\, selective weeding and synchronisation. The stay at the Sara Ana International Research Centre to compare cocoa production systems allows us to compare and deepen the concepts of the different production approaches from a scientific point of view and to analyse the results obtained so far. \nThe exchange with successful cocoa and coffee farmers in the region who have systematically developed a selection of their own cocoa varieties adapted to their micro-region complements the programme. \nFinally\, experiences and working methods to facilitate change processes are shared with producer families to break through the “technology transfer” funding approach. \nAnd since you “are” what you eat\, we will also devote a moment to preparing a menu with products from our systems. \nPlease note that visa regulations apply to entry into Bolivia. Especially people from the African region (country groups 2+3) should inform themselves early about the applicable visa regulations.

SUMMARY:19th International Course on Dynamic Agroforestry Systems
DESCRIPTION:International course in dynamic agroforestry (syntropic agroforestry)\nIn 1995 the first practices in successional agroforestry\, advised by Ernst Götsch\, were started in the Alto Beni region. ECOTOP welcomed these impetuses and turned this approach into its priority area of agroforestry work\, both regionally and internationally. Today producers in the Alto Beni region have multiple experiences using this approach and there is a diversity of plantations of different ages and complexity. \nECOTOP develops methods and strategies to facilitate the understanding of the principles of life for agroforestry production and the respective application at the small farmer level and advises producers in different continents. \nThe team of facilitators has extensive practical experience in facilitating processes and in the implementation and management of dynamic agroforestry systems oriented towards the principles of syntropic agroforestry in different eco-regions of the world. \nDate 9 to June 20\, 2019\nArrival in La Paz Saturday\, June 8\, 2019 Trip to Alto Beni Sunday\, June 9\, 2019 Return to La Paz Thursday\, June 20\, 2019 \nFriday\, June 21\, 2019 optional: Visit of the facilities of the Central de Cooperativas El CEIBO Ltda factory in El Alto – La Paz and return. \nPlace: Sapecho and Sara Ana in Alto Beni-Bolivia \nLanguage: Spanish and English \nCost: 1850.- USD \nIncludes: accommodation in La Paz from June 8 to 9\, 2019\, travel to Alto Beni\, accommodation\, food\, local transportation\, work materials\, return to La Paz and accommodation in La Paz from June 20 to 21\, 2019. \nApproximately 10 hours a day of work Instructors: \nDr. Joachim Milz Tec. Walter Yana \n  \nConcept and content\nThe basis for organic and syntropic agriculture is the understanding and comprehension of the interrelationships in a given ecosystem. Each ecosystem has its own dynamic that is expressed differently in each region but that has in common the principles of the dynamics of the natural succession of the species\, both in time and space \nThe starting point to create an agroecosystem is therefore the original ecosystem of the place itself\, which should serve as a guide. Many times\, we can still find niches or remains of these ecosystems\, and we try to replicate them and optimize them according to our main crop. \nTo implement the principles of sustainable production\, it is fundamental to be based on the principles of life. There are no universal formulas and much less technological packages for this type of agriculture. We need a change in attitude\, a change of paradigm\, and we have to develop other senses beyond our rationality to find again the spirit of an agriculture that is the basis of the welfare of humanity and of the planet itself. \nThe long experiences with Dynamic Agroforestry Systems in the Alto Beni region in Bolivia\, Central America\, Asia and West Africa with a wide range of systems established by farmers and experimental plots with crops of economic interest shows the feasibility of this approach. The concepts are reconstructed in practice in a participatory way and then replicated at the individual level in the plots of each of the participants. Therefore\, the methodological approach is considered a dynamic and eminently practical process\, and not a linear process. One of the fundamental methodological principles of this process is the practice developed from the understanding of the processes that govern nature. \nThe course will focus on dynamic agroforestry within a holistic framework with systemic thinking.   Holistic thinking considers that everything is interconnected and interrelated. The whole is more than the sum of its parts. If we take this approach in consideration\, we understand phenomena like diseases and pests in our crops as mechanisms of system regulation. In this way we can develop background solutions instead of fighting symptoms. \n\nMethodology\nConsidering that any change starts from a change of oneself\, experiential techniques will be developed that allow to relate with oneself and with one’s environment. The starting point is a diagnosis of the current productive situation with a systemic approach. It focuses on both food production and the production of “cash crops” and cocoa or other perennial crops in particular. There will also be a look back to what refers to the production of cocoa worldwide and analyze the productive situation of countries such as Ivory Coast\, Ghana\, Indonesia and Brazil. \nBased on this analysis\, the principles of dynamic agroforestry (syntropic agroforestry) are being built and applied technically in different contexts\, from the installation of a new plot without burning for annual crops to management practices such as pruning\, stratification\, selective weeding and synchronization. The stay on the international research center Sara Ana for comparison of cocoa production systems allows us to compare and deepen the concepts of different production approaches from a scientific perspective and analyze the results until now. \nExchanges with successful cocoa farmers in the region who have systematically developed selections of own cocoa cultivars adapted to their microregion complement the program. \nFinally\, experiences and work methods regarding facilitate change processes will be exchanged with producer families in order to break the assistance approach of “technology transfer”. \nAnd as one “is” what one eats\, we will also dedicate a moment to the preparation of a menu with products from our systems.
