Para satisfacer esta demanda, se ha ampliado la superficie cultivada en zonas de bosque tropical y se ha intensificado la producci\u00f3n sustituyendo los sistemas agroforestales tradicionales por monocultivos. Esto ha provocado una p\u00e9rdida de biodiversidad en las zonas de cultivo del cacao. La implantaci\u00f3n de pr\u00e1cticas agr\u00edcolas m\u00e1s sostenibles para la producci\u00f3n de cacao, como la agricultura ecol\u00f3gica y los sistemas agroforestales, depende de la rentabilidad que dichas pr\u00e1cticas ofrezcan a los agricultores.<\/p>\n<p>En este estudio se comparan la productividad y la rentabilidad de los sistemas agroforestales y los monocultivos a pleno sol (con dos a\u00f1os de sombra temporal proporcionada por plataneros) en reg\u00edmenes de agricultura ecol\u00f3gica y convencional, durante los primeros cinco a\u00f1os de un ensayo a largo plazo reci\u00e9n establecido en Alto Beni, Bolivia. Se registraron los rendimientos del cacao y de los cultivos complementarios (pl\u00e1tano\/banana), los costes, los ingresos y la demanda de mano de obra, y se estim\u00f3 el rendimiento de la mano de obra \u2014es decir, el rendimiento por jornada laboral\u2014 para cada sistema.<\/p>\n<p>Los resultados mostraron que los rendimientos del cacao eran aproximadamente un 40% m\u00e1s altos en los monocultivos que en los sistemas agroforestales. Sin embargo, los ingresos derivados de la venta de pl\u00e1tanos y pl\u00e1tanos de cocina compensan con creces esta diferencia desde el punto de vista econ\u00f3mico. As\u00ed pues, la rentabilidad del trabajo a lo largo de los a\u00f1os fue aproximadamente el doble en los sistemas agroforestales que en los monocultivos, a pesar de que los sistemas agroforestales exig\u00edan m\u00e1s trabajo que los monocultivos, principalmente debido al tiempo necesario para gestionar los \u00e1rboles de sombra. Los esfuerzos por desarrollar y facilitar el acceso de los agricultores a los mercados para la venta de cultivos complementarios, como el pl\u00e1tano com\u00fan o el pl\u00e1tano de cocina, son, por tanto, fundamentales para garantizar la rentabilidad de los sistemas agroforestales.<\/p>\n<p>Al comparar el manejo ecol\u00f3gico con el convencional, los rendimientos de cacao y la rentabilidad del trabajo fueron similares en ambos sistemas de manejo dentro de los sistemas agroforestales. Sin embargo, en los monocultivos, los rendimientos de cacao fueron casi un 50% inferiores con el cultivo ecol\u00f3gico. No obstante, el rendimiento por mano de obra fue similar. Esto se debi\u00f3 principalmente al menor coste del manejo ecol\u00f3gico.
