Contrariamente a las creencias tradicionales, el estudio descubri\u00f3 que cuando se aplican buenas pr\u00e1cticas de gesti\u00f3n cultural -como podas regulares, cosechas frecuentes y eliminaci\u00f3n r\u00e1pida de las vainas enfermas-, los sistemas agroforestales no presentan mayores tasas de plagas y enfermedades que los monocultivos. En experimentos realizados en Bolivia durante tres a\u00f1os, s\u00f3lo 14% de las vainas de cacao se vieron afectadas por plagas y enfermedades en todos los sistemas, sin diferencias significativas entre los sistemas agroforestales y los de monocultivo. Adem\u00e1s, el aumento de la frecuencia de la cosecha y la eliminaci\u00f3n de las vainas enfermas de cada 25 d\u00edas a cada 15 d\u00edas redujo significativamente la incidencia de enfermedades y aument\u00f3 el rendimiento hasta 46% en las peque\u00f1as explotaciones. Estos resultados sugieren que los peque\u00f1os agricultores de cacao pueden adoptar pr\u00e1cticas agroforestales sin temer un aumento de los problemas de plagas, siempre que mantengan buenas pr\u00e1cticas de gesti\u00f3n.
